D&M serves to the plight of the Cannabis Community and groups harmed by The War on Drugs

D&M Creative is fueled by the fusion of passion x compassion. We provide meaningful and engaging stories through theatre and film, serving the plight of the cannabis community and groups harmed by the infamous War on Drugs. We are exposing a lost chapter of history for the sake of bringing the deceitful and racist origins of cannabis prohibition to light.

By artistically tackling the cannabis propaganda era of the 1930s/40s, we hope to alleviate social stigma for the sake of medical aid & research, harm reduction services, and amnesty. Audiences will be enlightened by this lost history and will begin to unmask today’s equivalent of “Reefer Madness” propaganda and misinformation.

We launched a Gofundme with stickers, chocolates, and t-shirts given to donors in thanks, We raised over $1500 dollars, and we are incredibly grateful! For reference here’s our Executive Producer Dana Carrabon speaking to why the campaign is so important.

REEFER MADNESS:

O R I G I N S

Synopsis

1930s America. Commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics Harry J. Anslinger faces deep inner turmoil. Prohibition is over, his country is once again under the influence of alcohol, and faces the worst economic depression in the history of the world.

Swarms of unemployed citizens scatter the streets. They seek refuge from these terrible times by any means necessary - tobacco, alcohol, opium. Joining this list of American consumables is a newly declared evil. A “Mexican weed with roots in hell” known as “marijuana”, that is used by various people of colour in the U.S. Aided by the resources of a rich business tycoon, Anslinger aims to taint the view of the drug by association to what Americans hate most: coloreds, immigrants, and the devil himself.

Not only does he want people to turn away from the plant, he needs them to utterly fear it. Marijuana is spreading rapidly through the country prompting Anslinger to seek help from sources in the field. In a covert sting operation in Louisiana, he will require former WW1 black veteran Gary O’Neill to investigate members of the Jazz community and destroy the source of trafficking. Changing the public’s opinion will require the help of John and Jane, anti-drug christian activists who will lead the creation of marijuana propaganda.

The plan is convoluted, dirty, and racist—the perfect mix for effective change in the U.S. Ignorant to Anslinger’s true agenda, O’Neill and John & Jane are made to believe they are doing God’s work on earth; but Anslinger’s unholy alliance will prove to sow nothing but greed and madness in the ever-decaying land of the free.

Reefer Madness: Origins at the Fringe Festival 2019

TOfringe FESTIVAL_clr.jpg

Inspired by the worldwide fringe movement, Toronto Fringe was founded by local indie artists in 1989 to offer the “fringes” of the performing arts community a platform to create art at a grassroots level. It’s theatre by the people, for the people.

Since then, the Toronto Fringe Festival has become the largest theatre festival in Ontario, showcasing 150+ productions every July at 30+ venues. Throughout its three decades of growth, Fringe has kept the indie, grassroots spirit alive. Fringe keeps ticket prices lower than any other arts festival in the city, at $13, because we believe everyone should be able to afford to see theatre.

The Festival will took place from July 3rd - 14th.
